Nearly three hundred miles past Las Vegas rests one of the seven natural wonders of the world: the Grand Canyon. It’s 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and over a mile in depth. Hundreds of species live in this mass rock formation that can create its own weather.
I could go on and on about how profound this place is, but I think it’s important for you to know that this wonder in itself is what inspired my passion for exploring the world.
Eric and I set off for my first road trip to the Grand Canyon back in 2014. Of course, he had been there many times being a local of Flagstaff, AZ. So now it was my turn to experience the majestic landscape of the Grand Canyon like so many before me.
We drove off in his old pickup truck, taking the route up the 180 so that we could blatantly stare out the window at the highest peak in Arizona—Humphreys Peak (12,635’). It was so amazing to experience a state that had mountains and valleys with every twist and turn. In other words, a teaser before the Grand Canyon…
Beyond the 180, you’ll take the 64 north up to the Grand Canyon, bringing you to the most enticing entrance to the Grand Canyon of them all—the South Rim. Speeding through the Kaibab National Forest, there are plenty of Indian Reservations to see, but not much traffic.
The beauty of this road trip is that it’s a quick one. After a little over an hour, we pulled into the parking lot to find a decent amount of cars scattered across the mountainside. I couldn’t contain my excitement any longer. I ran to the cliffside to experience the views for myself.
The straight-up facts:
Regardless of where life takes you—trust me on this one when I say THIS is the best view I had ever experienced in my life. To some viewers, they think of this territory as a bunch of rocks. But to a photographer, it’s like a mural living and breathing in real-time.
We made our way down a man-made staircase that revealed itself on the side of a cliff. No handrails whatsoever. Eric fearlessly trodded down, while I kept up at a quick pace running off pure adrenaline. Glancing over the edge, I could see what looked like thousands of miles away.
While it felt like absolute insanity, it also felt like I was exactly where I needed to be. Once we got out a decent hike, there was a point where we sat on cliffs with our feet dangling over the edge with not a care in the world…ironically enough.
We high-fived after knocking out a killer hike and just sat to simply enjoy the views and the enchantment of it all. The canyon would echo as you shouted anything you wanted into the vicinity. The sunset danced across the daring cliffs, exposing tones of maroon, deep violets, and even hints of gold.
If you think this was the moment where my love for travel came into existence—you guessed correctly. Whatever kool-aid the Grand Canyon provided to me that day, I drank it. But there’s so much more to this beautiful beast than just the corner I experienced.
Beyond the one rim we encountered, there are two others to see: the West and the North Rims. Each side of the Grand Canyon comes with its own unique set of experiences, if it wasn’t already amazing enough… 😭
As you know, the South Rim is where we ventured to—in all its glory. In fact, it’s the best side of the Grand Canyon to experience, especially as a first-time visitor. Why? Because there are 50 different viewpoints to see, 20 of which are accessible by car. But don’t pick your favorite entrance just yet.
The South Rim
When most people talk about the Grand Canyon, they are referring to the South Rim entrance as this side of the canyon features the most picturesque views often portrayed in magazines. The reason being, this beaut is open all-year-long with access to the most eateries, historic lodges, and outdoor activities.
The highlight: Helicoptering over some of the best birds-eye views you’ve ever seen in your life. YES, PLEASE.
Where to crash: El Tovar Hotel, a famed lodge that’s hosted bright minds like Albert Einstein and Theodore Roosevelt includes front-row canyon views like no other.
The West Rim
The west entrance is just three hours from Las Vegas, making it the second most-visited place in the Grand Canyon. Unlike the South Rim, the West Rim is owned by the Hualapai Indians thus making National Park Passes invalid. Get ready to be blown away by the Skywalk, a glass bridge that towers 70 feet over the West Rim—an architectural anomaly.
The highlight: Taking a one-day whitewater rafting adventure with the Hualapai River Runners.
Where to crash: Bar 10 Ranch, a 200,000-acre ranch that’s family-owned, packed with activities like horseback riding, hiking, and evening entertainment.
The North Rim
If you’re looking for an experience that’s a little less crowded and more serene, this entrance is your best bet. While it may have fewer attractions to offer, nature reigns supreme and close in proximity. Hence, the North Rim is so close to Utah that you’ll be next to Zion National Park, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, and Bryce Canyon National Park. No big deal.
The highlight: Horseshoe Bend. This photo says it all.
Where to crash: The only lodge in town: Grand Canyon Lodge. Booking in advance goes without saying.
There you have it! The Grand Canyon in all of its prestige. Maybe I’m biased, but it just doesn’t get any better than all the options that one rock formation has to offer. Tell that to someone if you ever dare hear them say that the Grand Canyon isn’t much to see.
If there’s anything to take away from this, know that the Grand Canyon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that does nothing short of impress. It bewilders, mesmerizes, and especially evokes a feeling never felt anywhere else in the world.

The main things you’ll need are a domain and a content management system. I used GoDaddy to create my domain and then WordPress as my content management system, and yes, the systems work great together.
It did cost a pretty penny, but there are a lot of free resources out there that can help you. I recommend maximizing all of the resources that come with GoDaddy and WordPress as they have a TON of things that come with the systems once you pay the fees/annual dues to keep your site up and running. For example, GoDaddy has a hotline that you can call 24-7 to answer any questions you may have about your website.
